Turkman, 80 Years Old, 145*110 cm.

This is a hand-knotted vintage Turkoman (Turkmen) rug, approximately 80 years old, measuring 145 by 110 centimeters (roughly 4’9″ x 3’7″). Originating from the tribal regions of northern Afghanistan or the Turkmenistan border, these rugs are famous for their heavy, lustrous wool and deeply repetitive geometric patterns.

The design layout is a classic “All-Over Repeating Gul” pattern. The field is divided into a dense, staggered grid of octagonal medallions (guls), which are the signature of Turkoman weaving. These guls are arranged in rows, with each octagon containing a complex interior of smaller stepped diamonds, crosses, and hook motifs. The connecting spaces between the large guls are filled with small, geometric diamonds and crosses in ivory, creating a seamless, interlocking lattice. The rug is framed by a wide, multi-tiered border system. The main border features a repeating “hook and block” or “S-hook” pattern in navy blue, where stylized, angular hooks alternate with small, squared blocks. The guard borders feature a repeating chevron and star pattern, acting as a protective frame. The motifs are deeply symbolic. The octagonal guls represent tribal seals or family crests.

The color palette is a classic, saturated Turkoman composition. The primary field is a rich, vibrant madder red and crimson, which provides a warm, energetic background. The repeating geometric motifs are woven in deep indigo bluecharcoal black, and ivory/cream, creating a sharp, high-contrast rhythm across the entire surface. The main border features a deep navy blue ground with repeating geometric motifs in redivory, and mustard yellow, providing a cool, strong frame around the warm interior. There is a visible abrash(horizontal color banding) across the red field, a hallmark of natural, hand-prepared dyes.
