This authentic, hand-knotted Persian Heris rug originates from the Heris region of Northwest Persia (Iran). Estimated to be approximately 80 years old, dating back to the 1940s, this rug is a fine example of village weaving, renowned for its rugged durability, distinct character, and rich, earthy color palette. It measures 200 centimeters in length by 120 centimeters in width, making it an ideal size for a hallway runner, bedside rug, entryway, or small living space. The rug is hand-knotted using wool on a cotton foundation, and it features a low, even pile that has developed a soft, vintage sheen from decades of natural aging.
In terms of design and motifs, the rug features a striking “repeating all-over” pattern rather than a single, centralized medallion. The main field is set against a deep, dark indigo-blue background, which is completely filled with a stepped, serrated lattice pattern. Nestled inside this lattice work are large, stylized diamond-shaped medallions arranged in offset, alternating rows. Each of these diamond medallions is highly detailed, featuring jagged, serrated edges known as “latch-hooks,” which are an iconic motif in both Caucasian and Northwest Persian weaving. Inside each medallion, the central area is subdivided into contrasting geometric sections that resemble stylized flowers or crab motifs, creating a rhythmic and visually complex texture across the entire field.
The rug is framed by a wide, highly decorative main border set against a beige or ivory ground. This main border features large, repeating geometric blocks and stylized cartouches that abstractly represent floral vines and leaves. Flanking the main border on both the inner and outer edges are multiple narrow guard stripes, which utilize brick-red and navy-blue backgrounds and are decorated with small rosettes and chain-link patterns. At both the top and bottom ends of the rug, you can see the original, hand-tied fringes, which display the natural wear and slight fraying consistent with an 80-year-old antique.

The color palette of this Heris rug is derived entirely from natural dyes and has aged beautifully, showcasing a characteristic “abrash” or mottling effect. The deep field is a saturated midnight blue to charcoal indigo, providing a dark canvas that makes the colors pop. The medallions feature an eclectic mix of earthy tones, including madder red, golden ochre (mustard yellow), ivory/off-white, salmon pink, and camel brown. The main border stands out in a contrasting ivory/beige, which is punctuated by the brick-red and navy-blue guard stripes. In terms of condition, this 80-year-old rug shows signs of natural wear that add to its vintage appeal; the pile is low but consistent, and there are no major structural holes or issues, meaning the rug is sturdy and ready for daily floor use.
