Balooch, 120 Years Old, 103*70 cm

This 120-year-old antique Balooch rug, measuring 73 by 103 centimeters, is a true museum-quality piece that showcases the classic “all-over repeating octagon” or “Mina Khani” (flower and blossom) pattern that Balooch weavers are famous for.

The primary field is a warm, vibrant madder red and terracotta, which has aged gracefully into a mellow, earthy tone over the past century. This red field is populated by a dense, repeating grid of dark indigo and navy blue octagonal medallions. Inside each of these blue octagons, there is a central red “X” or cross motif, creating a rhythmic, alternating pattern of red and blue that dances across the entire rug.

Separating the octagonal rows are small, ivory and cream diamond motifs, which provide a bright, crisp contrast and break up the dense color. The main border features a classic “running dog” (S-hook) or latch-hook pattern in ivory and dark brown, creating a strong, protective frame. The pile is worn to a beautiful, low patina—a testament to its 120-year history—which gives the wool a velvety, luminous sheen. The edges are framed by thick, natural wool fringes, and the subtle abrash across the red field confirms the use of authentic, hand-prepared organic dyes, adding to the rug’s deep historical charm.
