Antique Ghashghayi rug, handmade, approximately 70 years old. Size: 205 × 170 cm. This is a generous, collector-friendly size with a strong decorative presence—ideal as a center rug in a living room or as a statement piece in a larger space where the pattern can be appreciated from both near and far.
The design shows a confident Ghashghayi-style geometry. The carpet is composed around a red/burgundy field filled with many small, repeating pattern units. In the field you can clearly see flower/rosette-type guls and herati-like small forms, along with diamond and hook-shaped devices that alternate in a rhythmic pattern. The motifs are tightly placed, giving the rug a rich, textured “fabric of pattern” look rather than a sparse composition.
There’s also a sense of structure and depth. You can spot diagonal and stepped motif groupings that create movement across the red ground. The rug doesn’t rely only on one main medallion; instead, it balances a central area of slightly denser patterning with smaller devices continuing toward the corners and edges. This creates a traditional harmony: the eye can travel across the whole field without losing focus.
The borders are one of the strongest features. The outer framing includes stacked border lines with multiple zones, then a more prominent guard-like border with angular, repeating elements. These borders “contain” the field and enhance the rug’s symmetry, making it look crisp and finished from all sides.

Color-wise, the rug is classic and appealing. The dominant deep red/burgundy background gives warmth and authority. Navy/indigo blue appears in the framing zones and key motif parts, creating a strong contrast that makes the pattern read cleanly. Cream/off-white highlights (inside the motifs) add brightness, while smaller accent colors—such as muted blue/teal tones and dark outlining—give definition and an antique character.
