Lilian, 60 years old, 160*110 cm

This authentic Persian Lilian rug hails from the village of Lilian in the Markazi Province of Iran, an area known for producing high-quality, sturdy rugs with a distinct, refined aesthetic. Estimated to be approximately 60 years old, dating back to the 1960s, this hand-knotted piece is a beautiful example of mid-century Persian craftsmanship. It measures 160 centimeters in length by 110 centimeters in width (roughly 5’3″ by 3’7″), making it a versatile size ideal for an entryway, a small living room accent, a bedside rug, or even a decorative wall hanging.

In terms of design and motifs, this Lilian rug features a highly detailed, dense “all-over” pattern set within a distinctive red, stepped geometric frame. The central field has a very deep, dark indigo or midnight blue background, which creates a striking and dramatic contrast with the vivid red frame and the intricate motifs. The dark field is completely filled with a repeating arrangement of stylized floral rosettes, small flower heads, and scrolling vines. These delicate floral shapes are woven in ivory, cream, soft gold, and touches of light blue, arranged in a rhythmic diamond lattice layout. The overall effect is one of extreme density and refinement, typical of high-quality Lilians.

The rug is framed by a striking, wide border in a vibrant, saturated madder red. The main border is enclosed by multiple narrow guard stripes. Inside the main red border, the design is a continuous “herati” or meandering vine pattern featuring stylized rosettes and floral tendrils in ivory and gold. The corners of the main border are squared off in a way that visually encloses the dark field within a red, jagged, stepped outline. This structural framing is a hallmark of Lilian weaving. The outer edges are secured and the short, even fringe at the top and bottom shows signs of gentle age, consistent with a 60-year-old rug.

The color palette of this Lilian rug is classic and deeply saturated. The dominant colors are a rich, bold madder red used in the borders and corner spandrels, contrasted against a deep, nearly black indigo blue in the central field. Accent colors woven into the floral motifs include ivory, cream, camel gold, and small hints of light turquoise or robin’s egg blue. Because the rug is 60 years old, the wool has a soft, worn-in patina and a subtle sheen, while the natural dyes have aged with a slight “abrash” (color variation) that adds depth and character. The pile is low and dense, indicating a tight knot count, and the rug is in good, sturdy condition, ready for daily floor use with no major structural issues.
