Malayer, 100 Years Old, 192*123 cm

This is a hand-knotted antique Malayer rug, approximately 100 years old, measuring 192 by 123 centimeters (roughly 6’4″ x 4’0″). Originating from the Malayer region in western Iran, these village rugs are celebrated for their unique blend of geometric tribal structure and refined Persian floral detailing.

The design layout is a classic “Medallion and Corner” composition, but executed with the bold, angular hands of a village weaver. The central medallion is a large, lobed, stepped diamond with a jagged, latch-hook outline. Inside this medallion is a beautifully detailed floral rosette in ivory, blue, and pink, surrounded by smaller geometric stars and diamonds. The corner spandrels are large, stepped triangular shapes in dusty rose, which extend inward toward the center, mirroring the jagged edges of the medallion. The space between the medallion and the spandrels is filled with small, scattered stylized floral and geometric motifs, including tiny stars, leaves, and hook shapes. The wide main border features a repeating “floral vine”or “geometric S-hook” pattern, where stylized flowers and leaves are connected by a continuous, angular vine.

The color palette is dramatic and sophisticated. The primary field is a deep, near-black midnight indigo blue, which provides an intense, absorbing canvas. The large central medallion and the distinctive, jagged corner spandrels are woven in a striking dusty rose and mauve-pink, creating a bold, high-contrast visual anchor. The intricate interior of the medallion is detailed with ivorycream, and teal blue, forming a complex floral rosette. The main border features a dusty rose/pink ground with repeating geometric and floral motifs in navy blueivory, and golden yellow, providing a warm, harmonious frame. A soft abrash is visible across the dark blue field, confirming natural dyes.

The guard borders feature small, repeating chevron, diamond, and star motifs. The motifs are deeply symbolic. The large central medallion represents the sun or a sacred lotus, symbolizing light and divine guidance. The jagged, stepped edges of the medallion and the latch-hook motifs represent protective teeth, woven into the rug to ward off the Evil Eye (Nazar). The floral rosette inside the medallion represents the Garden of Paradise, symbolizing fertility and abundance.
The corner spandrels represent the four seasons and the four corners of the earth, symbolizing stability and cosmic balance. The dark blue field represents the night sky and the infinite, providing a protective canopy over the home
